AT THE CORNER OF GO & TIME!

The symphony hits the streets THIS WEEK! After months in the making it is finally contest time! There is nothing quite like seeing the band line up in the end zone and hearing the stadium chant "I say Marching...you say Millers." If you're a rookie this year...get ready! This is the time of year where it all comes together and moves at record pace. I encourage both veterans and rookies alike to attend the Contest 101 gathering this Thursday. It's a great way to learn about contest etiquette, purchase spirit items, and meet other Marching Miller parents that you will surely see in the stands!

This is where the hard work the students have put in finally begins to pay off! They have put in hours of work and now that work is on display. As you watch your student on the field Saturday, don't forget about the part that YOU play in the Marching Millers' success. Thank you to all the volunteers that have assisted with practices, decorating, food, selling raffle tickets, props, etc.... BUT the season isn't over! WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! Be sure to check out the volunteer needs . Our students have given 110%...let's give 110% back to them!

Mr. Thornbury's emails are ALWAYS the final say in scheduling, so continue to check your inbox for student schedules and the band website for information as it becomes available.

CONTESTS 2024 - UNIFORMS AND ALL THE THINGS!

There is always a lot to do before a competition, and this week is an especially busy one! Here are some things you can do now to help your marcher prepare for the contest:

  1. LABEL SHOES - Have your student write their name in their new marching shoes and on their box with a paint pen/Sharpie ASAP. There will be over 300 identical shoes to keep track of on contest day. It is hectic getting ready, and sometimes kids grab the wrong shoes. It is a lot easier to return lost shoes to the owner when they are labeled with a name! Students will wear their marching shoes on the bus to the contest but are able to take shoes with them to change into after they perform.

  2. MAKE A CONTEST CHECKLIST - There are quite a few things to remember on contest days! Help your student make a contest checklist on their phone and go through it with them to make sure they have everything on the list ready to go Saturday. Look below for a checklist for winds/percussion and watch your band app for guard. This is a great lifelong skill to master! #bandlifeskills

  3. MAKE A HAIR PLAN - The band is not wearing shakos with their uniforms at contest this year, so everyone's hair will be visible. This contributes to the overall visual of the band. The students have a hair tutorial on their band app for competition day hair.  Anyone with chin length hair or longer will need to have hair "done" for the contest. Is your student planning to come to school with their hair done Saturday? If not, do they know what they need to do and can they do it? Do they have a friend that can help them if they need it? It is a good idea to keep gel, hairspray, bobby pins and hairbands in a bag that comes to every competition/game for touch ups! Are you a parent that loves to braid? Please consider helping the students prep for contest on Saturday! It is a fun way to get your volunteer hours in!

Packing Reminders for games/competitions (band/percussion only)

Students are responsible to bring the following (we may not have extras - check now):

  • Black shorts

  • Black compression shirt

  • Black crew/knee socks (tall - no skin showing)

  • Compression sleeves

  • Gloves

  • Marching shoes

  • Hair accessories as needed (see below)

  • Water jug

  • Lunch for practice

  • Money for concessions dinner or packed dinner

  • Portable charger if needed (it is a long day)

The Marching Millers also have a student uniform crew that can help with any uniform questions. Gloves/socks/compression shirts can usually be purchased the day of if your student forgets theirs.

UNIFORM CREW NEEDS YOUR HELP! Please reach out to Lyndsay Sheridan at uniforms@noblesvilleband.org. They especially need help getting hair ready Saturday before the kids leave. Contact Lyndsay if you are able to help!

It is crunch time!!!!

These are big weeks ahead! EVERY SINGLE STUDENT IS IMPORTANT TO THE BAND!  All are first string varsity players with no subs. We want everyone to be at their best for practice as we head into this exciting stretch of the season! We can help by making sure the students are rested, hydrated, and ready to perform. Things change quickly at this point, and one missed practice can put your student and other students behind. They rely on each other to practice spacing and movement throughout the practice. It is hard to do this with missing performers. It is understandable if a student is sick and needs to stay home, but please try and avoid scheduling non-essential appointments on practice nights. Your marcher is an important part of practice every single day!
